ResearchTurk Space participated in URBIS24 – Urban Insights from Space, held at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, from 16 to 18 September 2024, with the participation of its Founder, Dr. Tamer Özalp, and Co-Founder, F. Nil Özalp.


Organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), URBIS24 brought together urban policymakers, Earth Observation (EO) researchers, service providers and end-users to explore urban challenges and innovative EO-integrated solutions. The workshop addressed current needs and priorities in areas including urban planning, urban adaptation and liveability, while providing a platform to discuss emerging remote sensing methodologies and new applications of Earth Observation technologies.

During the workshop, Dr. Tamer Özalp presented his research titled “Monitoring and Detection of Urban Developments through Integration of Multiple Satellite Image Sources (Radar and Optical): A Case Study in Turkey.”

Özalp’s research focused on the integration of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite imagery to monitor changes associated with increasing urbanisation and to support the remote mapping of sensitive regions in Turkey.

Özalp’s research focused on the integration of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite imagery to monitor changes associated with increasing urbanisation and to support the remote mapping of sensitive regions in Turkey. The multi-source Earth Observation approach addresses the identification of spatial features associated with urban development and the analysis of land-use, environmental and maritime changes. Özalp’s research also examined how satellite imagery acquired at different wavelengths, together with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), can contribute to urban monitoring, change detection and mapping, as well as its potential use in supporting informed decision-making.


URBIS24 provided an important platform for discussing emerging methodologies, technological solutions and future applications of Earth Observation in urban environments. The workshop also offered opportunities to exchange ideas with professionals from different disciplines and to reconnect with colleagues and friends at ESA-ESRIN.
