ResearchTurk Space at the 1st Middle East Space Generation Workshop

ResearchTurk Space Founder Dr. Tamer Özalp participated as a Distinguished Speaker at the 1st Middle East Space Generation Workshop (ME-SGW 2019), organised by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) at Istanbul Aydın University on 14–15 December 2019.
The first-ever Middle East edition of the Space Generation Workshop brought together university students, young space professionals, experts, academics, space agencies and industry representatives from across the region. Designed to strengthen regional networks and connect the next generation of space professionals with experienced leaders in the field, the workshop addressed emerging challenges and opportunities for the development of space capabilities in the Middle East.
Alongside Dr. Tamer Özalp, the workshop programme featured Dr. Holger Krag of the European Space Agency (ESA), Prof. Dr. Bilge Demirköz, Prof. Dr. Alim Rüstem Aslan, and space experts from different countries.
Drawing on his significant contributions to the development of Türkiye’s national space programme between 1996 and 2012, and the experience gained throughout this period, Dr. Özalp contributed to two of the workshop’s thematic working groups. Within “Space Applications in the Middle East Region: Cooperation vs. Competition,” he led a session on “Country-specific Capacity Building in the Middle East.”
On the second day, Dr. Özalp contributed to the “Space Education and Outreach in Middle East” working group with a session on “Country Specific Capabilities and Cooperation.”
The workshop created an important environment for direct exchange between experienced space professionals and the emerging generation of the regional space community. Dr. Özalp engaged with young workshop participants throughout the event, exchanging perspectives on capacity development, cooperation and pathways for strengthening national and regional space capabilities.
Discussions and recommendations generated by the working groups were intended to be presented at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS) subcommittee meeting in February 2020, giving the perspectives developed by participants a pathway to an international policy platform.
